Submission Guidelines

Welcome authors, poets, artists and photographers

Arts have the ability to comfort, provoke thought, connect us to each other, and to help us heal during times of uncertainty and upheaval; they are a reflection of our culture, identity and the times in which we live. This unique magazine has always stood apart as a place to reflect upon and share the art of medicine and the humanistic principles that guide this university’s mission.

We encourage submissions from our whole WesternU community: current and prospective students, faculty, staff, administration, preceptors, advisory council members, donors, alumni, Health Career Ladder students and their parents, and all other interested friends and associates of WesternU.

All work must be your original unpublished creation. Submissions are reviewed, approved and edited by the editorial staff and should be relevant to the theme of the journal, health care practice, or WesternU. Multiple submissions are welcome. Submissions accepted for publication become the property of Western University of Health Sciences and Humanism in the Health Sciences.

  • We accept submissions in English and Spanish.
  • Text (essays, poetry, and creative fiction) should be submitted as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or rich text (.rtf) file. There is no minimum or maximum character or word count, however a suggested guideline is to keep essays around 1,000 words
  • Photography and fine art should be submitted separately from text as JPEG/JPEG (preferred), PNG, PSD, TIFF, AI, SVG, or EPS format. Please do not embed your photos into a Word, PDF or PowerPoint document. It is optional but strongly encouraged that you also include caption information about your photo or artwork (for instance: title, date, location) either in the metadata of the digital file, or separately as a text document. A general guideline for image size should be around 2400 x 1500 pixels (or 300 ppi at a 5×8 inch size). These guidelines are to ensure the best quality, but smaller or lower resolution images may be accepted at the discretion of the editors. If you need help scanning or photographing fine art, please contact us for assistance.
  • We are now able to accept short video (MP4, MOV), animated artwork (GIF), or audio (MP3, WAV) files — under 3 minutes.

Our goal is to accept as many submissions that meet the guidelines as possible to fully represent the diversity of identities, cultures, beliefs and experiences at WesternU and in the health sciences. We do not discriminate on the basis of (including but not limited to): race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, politics, disability, gender or sexual orientation. Editors should endeavor to preserve the voice and intent of the authors and artists while editing.

The submission window for 2022-2023 is now closed.
